A tribute to Alan Scott – A Great Engineer

What makes a company great is the individuals that work within it. NOJA Power’s Success as an organisation is simply because of its people. It is with great sadness that one of those people passed away on the 20th of June due to a long battle with Cancer. He passed away at a young age of 51 years.

Alan Scott was the Software Development Team Leader at NOJA Power. He was one of the original architects of the embedded software that runs in all of NOJA Power’s products today. He was part of the NOJA Family for the last 12 years and provided a significant contribution to NOJA Power’s achievements.

He was a very talented Engineer and originally a Kiwi (From New Zealand). He completed his Bachelor of Engineering, Majoring in Software Engineering from the University of Southern Queensland where he graduated with First Class Honours. He went on to further his qualifications, and completed a Masters of Information Technology at Queensland University of Technology.

When Alan was first interviewed at NOJA Power, Jay Manne (NOJA Power Engineering Director) had a small note written next to his resume which said that he was intelligent, articulate and enthusiastic. From this interview, stemmed his 12 year career at NOJA Power, where he was a respected manager and mentor to the software development team. He always put a significant amount of effort going beyond the norm to ensure a successful result.

Alan was the original architect for many of the processes and subsystems within the RC-10 (NOJA Power Control and Communications cubicle). Additionally Alan was an expert when it came to security, encryption and DNP3. He also implemented the first firmware bug tracking at NOJA Power which is the Trac Ticketing System that is in place today. From 2011 to 2016 he managed 19 software releases, which added approximately 60 new features over that time frame. It’s hard to believe that these are only handful of Alan’s contributions that have been highlighted.

NOJA Power staff will always remember him for his significant product development contributions but one aspect that will never be forgotten is his sense of humour. With Alan’s passing, it is unanimously agreed that it feels like NOJA Power has lost someone very precious and close to our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in Peace Alan Scott.
